One hundred years ago, there were an estimated 2 million wild horses roaming free. However, in 1971, Congress took authority under the Wild Free Roaming Horses and Burro Act, 16 U.S. C. 1331, and assigned the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) to manage and protect our American wild horses, and the number of wild horses still roaming freely today is less than 30,000; while 41,000 are still being warehoused in federal holding facilities at the taxpayers' expense. The practices of the removal and holding carried out in the Wild Horse and Burro Program by the BLM cost taxpayers upwards of $70 million per year. Madeleine Pickens has come up with a solution that will cut taxpayer expenses considerably and bring these horses back on the free-range where they belong.
The Mustang Monument Eco-Preserve, currently being developed near Wells, Nevada, envisions a natural sanctuary and tourism destination that will bring visitors in from all over the world to see these American icons up close in their natural habitat. There will be endless activities in which guests can participate, some of which include: electronic classrooms complete with educators and educational seminars about the wild horses and Native American history, guided hikes through the desert, camping in teepees, special campfires with musical storytelling and Native American legends, arts and crafts, creative writing and photography workshops, internships, and learning the science of the land and caring for the horses. The sanctuary will include a patriotic village for people of all ages will be able to learn about American history and culture that they might not learn in a normal classroom setting. Staying at Mustang Monument will be a world-class experience that will be remembered and shared long after visitors leave.
